Senior Collection: Animal PharmAnimal Pharm is a collection inspired by mental health disorders and the medications that are used to treat them. My theme pays tribute not only to my own life experiences, but also to my time at Dominican studying both biology-chemistry and fashion design. Each garment is inspired and modeled after a popular prescription medication, emulating the appearance of the pill and its effects on the mind. The pieces in this collection are all primarily made from spandex, a material as innovative to covering the outside of our bodies as medicine is to treating the inside of our bodies. Animal Pharm’s practical inspiration is combined with retro-futuristic styling to celebrate innovations in both science and fashion, as well as in the mindset of women, regarding neurotic demeanors as just another facet of personal beauty.

ProzacProzac is an anti-depressant
medication that can be prescribed to treat Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder. This
slim fitting dress pays tribute to the symptoms of the disorder as well as the
pill used to treat them. The green and cream-colored spandex fabrics that make
up the bodice and skirt mimic the actual coloring and appearance of the Prozac
pill. One side of the dress has a sheer mesh panel, allowing the dress to
“disappear” into the body, just as one may do so within their own repetitive
thoughts. A black stretch vinyl collar piece sits atop one shoulder to
symbolize dark and looming thoughts that are common for OCD sufferers. The slim
and encapsulating fit of the dress is intended to inhibit a full range of
motion for the body, just as this drug has inhibitory effects in the brain.
Finally, the garment’s bell-like sleeves show off large circular rings in the
hems to pay tribute to popular styles of the 1960’s while also representing the
exact amount of molecular ring structures in the chemical composition of
Prozac.

EffexorEffexor is another anti-depressant medication that can be prescribed to treat those that suffer from anxiety and social phobias. This dress is comprised of a black spandex mock neck bodice and a full paneled skirt made from aqua and red spandex. These colors correspond to those of the actual Effexor pill. The skirt features 9 uniquely shaped panels with a wired hem, allowing for the creation of eccentric shapes and varying hemlines. The energy of the skirt represents the disorderly and overwhelming feelings one may experience in an anxious episode. The slim, simple fit and solid coloring of the bodice emulate the contrasting calmness of the mind once one begins taking Effexor. The garment features 2 ring-like structures around the shoulder, representing the 2 molecular rings found in the chemical structure of this medication.

Seroquel
Seroquel is an anti-psychotic medication prescribed to treat symptoms of disorders such as Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia. This multi-piece garment features a retro-inspired cropped one-shoulder bodice, a high-waisted pencil skirt, and a mesh overdress. The bodice and skirt are made from red and cream spandex and feature curved style lines that mimic the logo of the Seroquel brand. The dual-coloring of this underdress pays tribute to the “split personalities” most often associated with Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia. The overdress is worn to “cage” the other pieces, much like Seroquel is intended to “cage” these personalities or treat other symptoms. The overdress is made from a sheer stretch mesh in order to allow the underdress to still be seen. The mesh dress features pill-shaped beading detail to represent the complexities of a mind with these disorders, as well as 4 large rings in the hems to represent the 4 molecular rings found in the chemical structure of this drug.
